THU 13 AUG – WED 19 AUG

Greetings, Durban!

Hope the week's been kind to you. It's a cooler one ahead — Saturday topping out around 21°C with the sea holding at a steady 21°, proper jacket-and-promenade weather rather than towel-on-the-sand weather. Perfect for a slow beachfront walk and a coffee that isn't rushed.

This week: the Durban SPCA wants you to sleep in a kennel for a very good cause, Durban lands a spot on the Cricket World Cup map, the Glenwood Village Market returns for a Saturday browse, and there's a one-way coastal hike from Umhlanga to Ballito if you're feeling ambitious. Plus Elvis at the Rhumbelow, a silent-disco trail run at sunrise, and the usual stack of weekend plans.

Here's your week…

The Durban & Coast SPCA turns 130 this year, and they want you to celebrate by spending the night in their kennels. Genuinely. For R130 a head, you check in on Saturday 15 August, decorate your kennel, get dinner, play games, and sleep alongside the rescue animals — the 13,000-plus homeless dogs, cats and creatures that come through their doors every year. The catch: you commit to raising a minimum of R5,000 in sponsorships from friends and family before the night. Part sleepover, part fundraising challenge, entirely Durban. One of the most unusual things you can do with a Saturday night in this city — and one of the most worthwhile. (Source: Durban & Coast SPCA)

📅 Saturday 15 August · Durban & Coast SPCA · R130 per person (+ R30 per dog) · Book via Quicket

Mark the calendar: Kingsmead is officially one of the host venues for the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. The ICC unveiled its twelve host cities at a launch in Johannesburg, with Durban named among eight South African venues for a tournament returning to Africa for the first time in 24 years — co-hosted with Zimbabwe and Namibia under the "Three Nations, One Heartbeat" banner. eThekwini has signed the host-city agreement and set aside budget to get the city ready. World-class cricket, global cameras on Durban, and a serious tourism boost. Still a year out, but the countdown's on.

🌤️WEEKEND WEATHER

Friday: 20°/10° · Clear · sea 21°
Saturday: 21°/9° · Overcast · sea 21°
Sunday: 21°/11° · Overcast · sea 21°

A cool, cloudy one. Saturday tops out around 21°C and the mornings are properly chilly — single digits Friday and Saturday — so the jacket's earning its keep this week. The sea's still sitting at 21°, which is warmer than the air first thing. Make of that what you will.

📜THIS WEEK IN DURBAN HISTORY

Gandhi's Durban years shaped a philosophy
Before he changed the world, Mohandas Gandhi was a young lawyer living and working in Durban. It was here that he began formulating Satyagraha — his philosophy of nonviolent resistance that would go on to free India and inspire civil-rights movements across the globe. The Gandhi Library in the Grey Street precinct still marks his deep connection to the city. Not a bad legacy for a Durban address.
