Thu 03 September – Wed 09 September
Greetings, Durban!
Spring has officially arrived — and it brought rain to celebrate. Friday, Saturday and Sunday are all looking wet, with Saturday the worst of it at 87%. The sea's holding at 22° if you're brave enough to wade through the weather, but the beach can probably wait until next week.
The good news: it's Father's Day weekend, which means there's every excuse to stay indoors, eat well, and let someone else plan the day for once. And if the dads in your life are the outdoorsy type, there's still Sunday at 61% — worth a gamble.
This week: a dramatic ship collision rocks Durban harbour, a man spends the night trapped in a Durban manhole and lives to tell the tale, and the Boks and All Blacks go at it again in Soweto for the series decider. Plus the botanical fair, a Jekken House Affair at KZNSA, the KZN Phil, and a full stack of weekend plans for a rainy one.
Here's your week.

A bulk carrier caused a significant incident at Durban's port this week when the HAWK S — a recently built vessel measuring approximately 180 metres long — collided within the harbour. Photos from the scene show significant damage to the ship. The cause is under investigation by the Transnet National Ports Authority, which has confirmed no injuries or fatalities. The HAWK S arrived in Durban on 31 August sailing under the Liberian flag; vessel-tracking data shows it was underway using its engine at around 8pm on Tuesday before being recorded as moored. A full statement from TNPA is expected once the investigation concludes. (Source: The Witness)

A man fell into an uncovered manhole in Riverside, Durban North at around 8pm on Monday and spent the night trapped, injured and alone underground. Passers-by heard his cries for help on Tuesday morning. IPSS Medical Rescue paramedics treated him for a broken leg before the eThekwini Fire Department and Durban Metro Police Search and Rescue extricated him. IPSS's Samantha Meyrick described the accident as "very unfortunate and probably preventable." Local councillor Heinz De Boer has called on the City's roads department to urgently investigate, noting that around 90% of manhole damage is caused by trucks. Residents are urged to report uncovered manholes in their areas. (Source: ECR)
🌤️WEEKEND WEATHER
Friday: 22°/16° · Showers · sea 22° · 100% rain
Saturday: 19°/15° · Rainy · sea 22° · 87% rain
Sunday: 18°/14° · Showers · sea 22° · 61% rain
A wet one all round — Friday is a write-off, Saturday is the worst of it, and Sunday gives you a fighting chance at 61%. The sea's sitting at 22° all weekend, which is almost warmer than the air. If you're planning anything outdoors, Sunday afternoon is your best window. And if the dads in your life had beach plans — maybe a restaurant reservation instead.

Some rooms make it clear that much of the country's creative energy has landed in one place — and the Art Legacy Gala at the Premier Hotel in Durban last week was one of them. Black Coffee, DJ Tira and Merlon brought together musicians, artists, fashion designers, actors and business figures for the launch of the Art Legacy Fund, supported by the Black Coffee Foundation. Unathi Nkayi hosted an evening of speeches, performances and fundraising that ended with more than R3 million raised to support artists and creatives in times of need. 📜THIS WEEK IN DURBAN HISTORY
Christmas gave the province its name
Sailing past the coast on Christmas Day in 1497, Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama named the land Natal — Portuguese for "Christmas" — and the name stuck for centuries. The settlement that became Durban followed much later, in 1824, when a small party of British traders set up a post on the bay with the permission of the Zulu king, Shaka.
