THU 24 SEP – WED 30 SEP
Good afternoon, Durban! And Happy Heritage Day. 🇿🇦
It's a big one today — South Africa marks 31 years of Heritage Day as a democratic celebration, and KZN is hosting the national programme at King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi. Kingsmead has been buzzing too, with South Africa taking on Australia in the first ODI of a three-match series. Two reasons to feel good about where you live today.
Weather-wise: Friday and Saturday are warm at 25°, with Saturday carrying a 53% rain risk — get your outdoor plans done in the morning. Sunday gets wetter, so save that for a slower day.
This week: a Durban dancer shines internationally, the Sharks open their URC season at Kings Park on Saturday, and the Heritage weekend is packed — the Shisanyama Festival with Kelvin Momo, Rocky Horror at 100 Compensation, the Sunrise Run, the EUFF, and enough food and music to fill three days.
Here's your week.

🇿🇦 Happy Heritage Day — and KZN is where the nation is celebrating
Today, South Africa marks 31 years since Heritage Day was first celebrated in a post-apartheid democracy — and in 2026, the entire country's official national programme is being held right here in KwaZulu-Natal, at King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi, in partnership with the Zulu Kingdom and the Royal House.
The theme this year is "Celebrating Our Living Heritage: Strengthening the Ties That Bind Us" — and KZN, where the day has its deepest roots (this province originally observed 24 September as Shaka Day, honouring the king who united the Zulu nation), is the natural home for it.
Whether your Heritage Day looks like a braai with neighbours, a morning at the Botanic Gardens, or a plate of something your grandmother used to make — today is yours. Happy Heritage Day, Durban.

🌤️WEEKEND WEATHER
Friday: 25°/16° · Overcast · sea 23°
Saturday: 25°/19° · Overcast · sea 23° · 53% rain
Sunday: 24°/18° · Rainy · sea 23° · 63% rain
Friday and Saturday sit at a pleasant 25° — good coastal weather if you can catch the dry windows. Saturday carries a 53% rain risk so have a plan B ready, and Sunday gets wetter at 63%. The sea holds at a comfortable 23° all weekend. Get your outdoor plans done Saturday morning and let Sunday take care of itself.
📰DURBAN THIS WEEK
💃 Durban dancer shines on the world stage
Durban's own Mia Meszarich has picked up recognition at an international lyrical dance competition — the kind of local talent story that deserves the spotlight. Proud moment for the city. (Source: ECR)
🌍 Five days of African heritage in the Valley of a Thousand Hills
The Wushwini Pan African Centre becomes a stage for something bigger than a festival this week — the Botho Heritage International Festival lands from 23–27 September, overlooking Inanda Dam, with theatre, music, dance, food and storytelling filling five days. Now in its twelfth year, it's built around a simple idea: heritage isn't something you inherit and leave untouched, it's something you keep shaping. Grandparents share the stage with teenagers. Wheelchair users perform alongside able-bodied dancers. The city meets the countryside. This is Heritage Month working the way it's meant to. (Source: Time Out Durban)
🔥 A shisanyama festival with a story behind the smoke
Berea Rovers hosts Durban's Shisanyama Festival this Saturday, with Kelvin Momo headlining a day built around flame-grilled meat, live music and the small vendors who've turned township food culture into something the whole city shows up for. The festival carries the name of Jabulani "Mjay" Zama — the man behind Eyadini Lounge — whose influence on Durban's food and nightlife scene outlived him. Good food, good music, and a reason behind both. (Source: Time Out Durban)

Babes Wodumo has a warning for the next generation of artists: gqom is losing what made it gqom. The Durban-born artist, who helped put the genre on the global map, is pushing back against what she sees as a watering-down of its identity. 📜THIS WEEK IN DURBAN HISTORY
Kingsmead: where the ball misbehaves
Durban's Kingsmead is one of South Africa's great Test cricket grounds — and famous for a peculiar coastal quirk: the humid, overcast sea air makes the ball swing sharply, turning batting into a battle and giving fast bowlers something to smile about. It has hosted international cricket for the best part of a century. And today, as South Africa face Australia in the first ODI of a three-match series on that same ground, it's worth remembering what Kingsmead has always been: a place where the conditions are part of the game.
