THU 22 OCT – WED 28 OCT

Greetings, Durban!

The weekend weather: the latest forecast makes Saturday the star, dry and around 25°, with a 23° sea waiting. Sunday is looking showery, so if you've been waiting for the first proper beach day of the season, Saturday's your moment.

This week: the plan to fill Funworld's old spot on the Golden Mile took a real step forward, a girl first spotted at a Durban flea market walked her 14th Victoria's Secret runway, and the Proteas have dragged Australia into a series decider. Plus the Mahotella Queens at the Playhouse, a free ocean-themed theatre festival on Sunday, two Pink October fundraisers, and a new coach at Golden Arrows.

Here's your week.

🎢 The Golden Mile's next big ride is one step closer
For 75 years, a trip to the beachfront meant Funworld. It shut in May 2023, and the promenade has been missing something ever since. This week, the plan to fill that gap cleared a real hurdle: a development finance institution has agreed to back the early-stage work on the proposed R980 million Durban Amusement Park. The drawings are done, and the detailed engineering is now under way.

Hold off on promising the kids a ride, though. This money pays for the groundwork (permits, plans and sign-offs), and that process has until roughly March 2027 to play out before anyone breaks ground. What's on the drawing board is ambitious: a shopping strip, a refreshed outdoor stage for events, a virtual-reality and digital zone and, of course, the rides, with enough under cover that a rainy afternoon won't close the gates. The city is counting on about 1,400 people finding work through the build and the park's day-to-day running. It's one of several beachfront projects that together add up to more than R2 billion. ✨ From a Durban flea market to her 14th Victoria's Secret runway
Candice Swanepoel's career began with a chance discovery at a Durban flea market when she was 15. Twenty-three years later, the KwaZulu-Natal-born model was back on the Victoria's Secret catwalk in California last Sunday. It was her 14th time walking the show, in the same week she turned 38.

She made her debut for the brand in 2007 and was named an official Angel three years later. Before the show, she posted a message to her younger self: a nod to "a little girl who once dreamed of being there." Somewhere under those runway lights was a teenager first noticed at a KZN market. Not a bad way to mark a birthday. (Source: ECR)

🌤️WEEKEND WEATHER

Friday: 23°/18° · Mostly dry · 10% rain
Saturday: 25°/20° · Dry · sea 23°
Sunday: 25°/20° · Showers likely · 75% rain

Good news: the forecast has shifted in your favour since midweek. Friday now looks largely dry, and Saturday is the pick of the weekend: warm, rain-free and with the sea sitting around 23°. Sunday is the one to watch, with a strong chance of showers, so get your beach time in on Saturday.

📰DURBAN THIS WEEK

🎣 The first wahoo are here, so summer fishing season is on its way
Want proof summer is close? Wahoo, the speedsters of the offshore world, have been spotted up the coast for the first time this season. Closer to home, boats heading out from Durban are coming back with tuna, couta and yellowtail, and Durban Bay is still rewarding patient anglers with grunter. On the rocks and beaches, garrick and kob are leading a mixed bag, helped along by calmer seas. (Source: ECR / Angler News South Africa)

🌊 Sun 25 Oct — Theatre by the Sea, from two brothers who've never swum
Vuma and Vumile Madlanga have lived near the ocean their whole lives, yet neither has ever been in it. Zulu custom holds that twins should keep their distance from the sea. So instead of swimming in it, they've built a stage beside it. Their first Theatre by the Sea festival takes over the open ground next to the Port Natal Maritime Museum, just off the Esplanade, this Sunday. Ten groups from KZN and the Eastern Cape will perform short street-theatre pieces (music, dance and drama, around 15 minutes apiece), each exploring what the ocean means to different people. The day opens at 9am with a ceremony for the sea and a clean-up around the museum, and the performances run from 10am until 4pm. "This is theatre that breathes with the sea," says Vuma.

Entry is free. It's outdoors and showers are forecast, so bring a rain jacket alongside the sunscreen, plus water and something to sit on. Parking is available at the BAT Centre, the Maritime Museum and the small craft harbour.

⚽SPORTS CORNER

🏏 The Proteas pull level, so it all comes down to Cape Town
Earlier this month, Australia beat the Proteas by 214 runs at Kingsmead. On Thursday in Gqeberha, South Africa returned the favour with interest. Rain washed out most of the first two days, and the hosts were in trouble at 110 for 6 until captain Temba Bavuma played the innings of his life, a career-best 179. Marco Jansen then took 5 for 33 as Australia folded for 99 and had to follow on, and Kagiso Rabada and Wiaan Mulder finished the job on the final afternoon. The win came by an innings and 31 runs. The series stands at 1–1, and the decider starts on Tuesday.

🏉 Fri 23 Oct — Cardiff vs Sharks
The Sharks opened their season with two home wins (yes, including that one against Leinster), then lost 39–22 to the Stormers in Cape Town, before bouncing back with a 40–33 win away to Lyon in the Challenge Cup last weekend. Next comes a Friday night in Wales, with just a single log point separating the two sides. André Esterhuizen returns as captain after his mandatory rest week, Ethan Hooker and Edwill van der Merwe are back on the wings, and Ox Nché and Thomas du Toit are on the bench. Eben Etzebeth remains sidelined. It's a late one for viewers at home.

⚽ Ncikazi is back at Golden Arrows
Golden Arrows have parted ways with Pitso Dladla and turned to a familiar face: Mandla Ncikazi, the coach who led Abafana Bes'thende to a club-record fourth-place finish in 2020/21. He returns after five years at Orlando Pirates, mostly as an assistant, during which the Buccaneers' technical team collected nine trophies. He takes over a side that went unbeaten through its first six games of the season but hasn't won in its last five. His first chance to turn that around could come quickly: Arrows host Chippa United in the Carling Knockout last 16 on Saturday.

⚽ Also in the Carling Knockout: AmaZulu travel to Kruger United (Sunday, 3pm, Mbombela), and Richards Bay visit Sekhukhune (Sunday, 6pm, Peter Mokaba Stadium). (Source: Africa Soccer)

📜THIS WEEK IN DURBAN HISTORY

Africa's oldest garden is still growing in Durban
Long before the city's skyline went up, someone was already planting. The Durban Botanic Gardens have been cultivated since 1849, which makes them the oldest surviving botanical garden on the African continent and older than most of the city that has grown up around them. Nearly 180 years on, they're still free to wander, and late spring is one of the best times to do it.
