THU 17 SEP – WED 23 SEP

Greetings, Durban!

It's a wet one to start — Friday is a complete washout at 100% rain, Saturday stays soggy at 88%, but Sunday opens up to 24° and the sea holds at 22° all weekend. Worth waiting for.

This week: the Springboks ended a 50-year wait in Baltimore — and if you stayed up past midnight to watch it, you earned that Sunday sleep-in. Spring has arrived on the KZN coastline too, with the fish starting to move and the rivers firing up. Heritage Day weekend is one week away, and Durban has a full stack ready — the Glenwood Book Fair, SA vs Australia at Kingsmead, Sjava and Simmy, and more.

Here's your week…

🏉 The Boks did it. First series win over the All Blacks since 1976.

On Saturday night in Baltimore — in front of 68,173 people, the largest rugby crowd North America has ever seen — the Springboks defeated New Zealand 43-28 to seal Rugby's Greatest Rivalry series 3-1. South Africa had not won a Test series against the All Blacks since 1976. Fifty years. Four Tests. Three wins.

Kurt-Lee Arendse collected a loose ball inside his own half with under an hour played and ran 55 metres to score the try that ended the contest. Rassie Erasmus coached his 100th Test on the same field where his coaching career began. Siya Kolisi extended his record for wins as Springbok captain to 56, and said afterwards: "We do it for the people."

Something shifts along the KZN coastline when spring arrives — and anglers are feeling it this week. The beaches are producing well, with kob the prize catch, while Amanzimtoti has lit up with some serious shad action. Head offshore and the North Coast is the place to be, with tuna and snoek featuring heavily in the catch reports. Further south, patient anglers working the right tidal windows are being rewarded.

Inland, the rivers are fishing well too — the uMngeni and Mooi are giving up trout, and the dams around the Midlands are seeing good bass activity as the water warms.

🌤️WEEKEND WEATHER

Friday: 16°/14° · Showers · sea 22° · 100% rain
Saturday: 21°/14° · Rainy · sea 22° · 88% rain
Sunday: 24°/17° · Overcast · sea 22°

Friday is a write-off — 100% rain and a chilly 16°. Saturday improves slightly but 88% is still very much a rainy day, so hold off on beach plans. Sunday is the pick of the weekend — the rain clears, temperatures recover to 24°, and the sea holds at a steady 22° all three days. If you're getting outdoors this weekend, Sunday is your window.

⚠️ Level 6 rain warning — know before you go this weekend
A serious weather alert is in place for KZN this weekend — municipalities across the province are on standby as a Level 6 rain warning expands inland. 😤 Durban has a public urination problem. Residents want it sorted.
It's not a comfortable topic — but it's a real one. Frustration is growing among Durban residents over persistent public urination in parts of the city, and they're calling on local government to act. The kind of quality-of-life issue that erodes a neighbourhood slowly and quietly until people have had enough.(Source: The Citizen)

🏉 The Boks sealed it in Baltimore — here's what happened
In case you missed the alarm at 23:00 on Saturday night: the Springboks beat New Zealand 43-28 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore to take Rugby's Greatest Rivalry series 3-1 — their first series win over the All Blacks since 1976. Kurt-Lee Arendse collected a loose ball inside his own half and ran 55 metres to score the try that ended any doubt. Rassie Erasmus coached his 100th Test. Siya Kolisi said: "We do it for the people." The series that came through Durban ended in front of 68,173 people in the United States — the largest rugby crowd North America has ever seen. 🏉 The Sharks are ready — JP Pietersen means business
The new URC season is here and the Sharks have arrived with intent. André Esterhuizen captains the side again, supported by co-captains Emile van Heerden, Nick Hatton and Vincent Tshituka — a leadership structure deliberately spread across the squad. Head coach JP Pietersen has named a 67-strong group that includes Springboks Eben Etzebeth, Ox Nche, Ethan Hooker and Edwill van der Merwe, alongside veterans like Bongi Mbonambi, Makazole Mapimpi and — yes — Ma'a Nonu, who joins as a mentorship figure for the young backs. Kings Park hosts Ospreys next Saturday 26 September. Come and watch. (Sources: Rugby365 · The Citizen · IOL)

⚽ AmaZulu open a door to Spain for KZN's young talent
AmaZulu have formalised a partnership with Spanish club Levante — creating a structured pathway for young KZN and South African players to pursue opportunities in Spain. For a province with serious footballing talent and not always the platforms to match, this is the kind of deal that could quietly change a few lives. (Source: SABC Sport)

🎨DURBAN-MADE

👗 The Durban Fashion Fair delivered — and then some
The 15th Durban Fashion Fair wrapped up this week, and the stories coming out of it are worth telling. One designer took to the runway with an emotional tribute woven into their collection — the kind of moment that reminds you that fashion here carries real weight and real history. Alongside them, legacy designers who helped build the DFF into what it is today returned to the runway, closing a 15-year circle. Heritage Month and a fashion fair that has genuinely shaped Durban's creative identity — a good combination. (Source: IOL)

📜THIS WEEK IN DURBAN HISTORY

Durban's world champion of the waves
Shaun Tomson grew up on Durban's beach breaks, catching his first wave at the Bay of Plenty at age ten. He went on to become the 1977 World Surfing Champion and is regularly ranked among the greatest surfers of the century — a Durban boy who helped redefine modern tube-riding and became a blueprint for the professional surfer the world over.
