Thu 10 September to Wed 16 September
Greetings, Durban!
Spring is here — and it came in a little damp. Expect showers across Friday and Saturday with about a 40% chance of rain, though it's not a complete write-off. Sunday is the pick of the weekend at 32% and a touch warmer. Jacket-and-promenade weather rather than towel-on-the-sand weather — plan accordingly.
This week: a Durban chef heard an elderly woman was trapped in a burning building and ran in anyway — and the city raised R61,000 to say thank you. Raven-Symoné is filming in South Africa and has some things to say about Durban. The Boks go for the series in Baltimore at 23:00 SAST on Saturday — set the alarm. And the Durban Fashion Fair turns 15, with 84 designers hitting the runway from Wednesday.
Here's your week.

When the Delphi Greek Taverna in Windermere went up in flames last Thursday, Ayakha Godlwana — a 32-year-old chef working nearby — heard that an elderly woman was still trapped upstairs. He went in anyway. No training, no equipment, just a decision made in seconds. He found Doddy Teranes, 74, disoriented in the smoke and got her out safely. Then he went back to work and finished his shift.
He declined the hero's award twice. The Teranes family called him an angel. Durban called it R61,000 on BackaBuddy — because sometimes a city finds its own way to say thank you. (Source: IOL)

Raven-Symoné is in South Africa filming Cheetah Girls: Next Gen, and she's been candid about what she found here. The actress visited both Cape Town and Durban, and told Good Hope FM that the country challenged every assumption she'd arrived with. She had a message for locals too — stop taking it for granted. "You guys have a wonderful energy," she said.
Sometimes the clearest view of a place comes from someone seeing it for the first time. (Source: ECR)
🌤️WEEKEND WEATHER
Friday: 24°/17° · Showers · sea 22° · 39% rain
Saturday: 23°/17° · Showers · sea 22° · 39% rain
Sunday: 24°/19° · Showers · sea 22° · 32% rain
A cooler one this weekend — jacket-and-promenade weather rather than towel-on-the-sand weather. The rain risk sits at around 40% across Friday and Saturday, so it's not a write-off, but worth having a plan B. Sunday is the pick of the three at 32% and a touch warmer overnight. The sea's holding steady at 22° all weekend if you do get a window.

📜THIS WEEK IN DURBAN HISTORY
From whaling station to whale sanctuary — on the same stretch of coast
For nearly 70 years, one of the world's largest land-based whaling operations ran from Durban's Bluff — processing thousands of whales a year from 1907 until stocks collapsed and whaling was finally banned in 1975. The turnaround that followed is remarkable: in 2019, that same Bluff coastline became the world's first certified Whale Heritage Site. The same water. Completely different relationship with what swims in it.
