THU 01 OCT – WED 07 OCT

Greetings, Durban!

October's here, and the city has officially switched to summer mode, even if the weekend weather hasn't quite got the memo. Friday is your best bet: 23°, partly cloudy and dry. Saturday and Sunday both lean wet, so line up an indoor plan B.

This week: GO!Durban is inching towards its first passengers, the city has launched a pocket-sized digital guide to itself, and reigning champions Leinster come to Kings Park on Saturday night. Plus Oktoberfest at Greyville, a candlelit Adele tribute at the Playhouse, Black Coffee's November date, and MTN8 final tickets dropping tomorrow morning.

Here's your week.

🚌 Durban's buses are (finally) about to move

Thirteen years after the name was launched, roughly R9 billion later, and with a missed 2017 target long in the rear-view mirror, GO!Durban is edging toward the road. If all goes to plan, October is when the city starts putting the system through its paces, and by December the first route should be carrying real commuters between Pinetown and Bridge City. For context: the mayor himself has admitted that not one passenger has ridden that corridor yet.

The breakthrough came at the negotiating table rather than on the tarmac. The city has finally reached terms with the taxi and bus operators whose objections kept the project parked for years. The big-picture promise is a city where catching proper public transport doesn't involve a long trek to find it.

☀️ Summer is officially open, and Durban now fits in your pocket

Tourism and Heritage Month has wrapped, and the city has flipped the sign to summer. Mayor Cyril Xaba marked the switch at Tyler's in Umdloti this week by unveiling a new QR code: point your phone at it and you get a digital guide to the city, from where to swim and what to eat to the places that carry Durban's history.

The useful twist is that it isn't only meant for visitors. The city wants locals using it too, finding corners of their own town they've driven past for years and spreading the word when they discover something good. Which, frankly, is what we're here for every Thursday. (Source: IOL)

🌤️WEEKEND WEATHER

Friday: 23°/13° · Partly cloudy · sea 22°
Saturday: 24°/12° · Rainy · sea 22° · 57% rain
Sunday: 22°/16° · Showers · sea 23° · 66% rain

Friday's the one to grab: warm, partly cloudy, and no rain in the forecast, so it's the best window for a beach walk or a sundowner on the promenade. Saturday looks warmer on paper but carries a better-than-even chance of rain, and Sunday is wetter still. Keep the umbrella handy for the weekend proper. The sea warms a touch to 23° by Sunday.

👗 A collection designed from a hospital bed
Karen Monk-Klijnstra's road to this year's Durban Fashion Fair ran through two hospital stays. First came a bad fall and surgery, days before the Vintage Vogue & Velocity event, which she attended in a wheelchair. Then, a little over a week later, came a second admission, this time for blood clots in her lungs. Confined to bed with only her phone, a pen and paper, she reworked her whole range from scratch. "It truly happened from my bedside," she says. She made it out with just 48 hours to spare, and the collection made it to the runway. (Source: The Citizen)

🎨DURBAN-MADE

🌳 The jacaranda trees made of wire and beads
Donald Songore never set out to be an artist. He arrived from Zimbabwe at 16 looking for work, and years later, while delivering paper to schools, he stayed up one night building a model animal for a learner's school project. Teachers noticed and started commissioning pieces, and by 2014 he'd quit the paper job to make art full time. That work now supports his whole family. September's Woza Moya Artists' Wall showcased his latest collection: jacaranda trees in full bloom, with pink and purple beads for blossoms on branches of hand-twisted wire. "The idea for the trees came from my brother," he says. Woza Moya, the Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust's empowerment project, puts a new local artist on its wall every month, so its Hillcrest and Kloof shops are worth a visit any time. (Source: Highway Mail)

💡 OPPORTUNITIES

💼 A new fund for creative businesses, shaped partly in Durban
If you run a fashion label, a music business or a film and digital-content outfit, this one's worth a look. The national Department of Small Business Development has launched the Creative Biz Fund, which pairs finance with hands-on business support, aimed squarely at creative entrepreneurs. Some of its groundwork was laid at a creative-sector gathering held in Durban earlier this year. The fund is run with SEDFA, the government's small-business finance agency, so keep an eye on SEDFA's channels for application details. (Source: Lifestyle & Tech)

📜THIS WEEK IN DURBAN HISTORY

The arch that unites a nation
Moses Mabhida Stadium was built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, but its most famous feature carries a bigger message. The arch that soars more than 100 metres above the pitch starts as two separate legs on the southern side and merges into one on the north: a deliberate symbol of a once-divided country coming together. The stadium takes its name from Moses Mabhida, a leading figure in the struggle against apartheid. Visitors can take the SkyCar up to a viewing platform at the top of the arch for views across the city and the Indian Ocean, and the truly brave can jump off it on the Big Rush Big Swing. Next Saturday, 50,000-plus football fans will fill the bowl beneath it for the MTN8 final.
